A team ‘First Swing’ won the regional heat of the Welsh StreetGolf Championship earlier in the year at Cardiff City House of Sport, and yesterday won the national final at Three Hammers Golf Complex in Wolverhampton – for the second year running.
StreetGolf uses all the skills learnt on the golf course but instead of the putting green the golf ball is put through obstacles that can be found on the ‘street’; for example, tyres, bins or nets. Teams are made up of four players and have to complete the course with the best score.

On Wednesday 6th April three of the ‘First Swing’ teams competed in the Welsh Street Golf Championship held at The Cardiff City House of Sport. Two of whom successfully qualified for the next round of the tournament which was held yesterday Wednesday 15th June at Three Hammers Golf Complex in Wolverhampton. The team also won both heats last year, and had been looking forward to the challenge of retaining their title.
The defending champions were supported by David Pocock and Katy Edwards PGA Professionals, with the winning team consisting of Ruby Dark, Joseph Lock, Finley Richards and Freddie Triggs. The other team took the bronze award (finishing in 3rd); Lewis Woods, Callum Hook, Ethan Paterson and Joel Paterson. Callum Hook also finished 2nd in the team event and Lewis Woods finished 3rd.
The golf development programme is approved by the Golf Union of Wales, and is delivered by Bryn Meadows Golf, Hotel & Spa Head of Golf Development, David Pocock. He said, “For a golf tutor, the biggest reward is seeing those who you have coached excel. These children started with little to no skills in golf and over a short period of time have developed into very promising players. Katy and I were thrilled to support them and it was exhilarating to watch them win, and we are both extremely proud of them all.”
The ‘First Swing Golf Academy’ started in September 2014 at one of the best golf development facilities in Wales. The future outlook for the team of budding golfers is very promising. So far over 1000 local children have enjoyed taster sessions on the academy course, whilst enjoying the great outdoors and panoramic stunning views over the surrounding area, with each hole of the course named after a local school.
Ruby Dark, part of the winning team said; “I love taking part in ‘First Swing’ and the StreetGolf games were so much fun. I can’t wait to go back to school and tell all my friends that we won! David and Katy were really helpful and kept me calm and reminded me of what we’d learnt in our lessons. I’m looking forward to playing again next year already, bring it on!”
