2016 – A year of fantastic achievements
23 Dec

2016 has been a year of fantastic achievements for Bryn Meadows, across all departments of the resort.

Resort:

The resort was shortlisted as a finalist at the Caerphilly Business Forum Awards at the end of November, as ‘Business of the Year – Over 25 employees’.  The prestigious awards ceremony has been held at Bryn Meadows for the last 3 years, catering for up to 300 guests.   It was the first time the resort had been shortlisted as a finalist.

Caerphilly Business Forum Chair Denise Lovering said: “The awards are an opportunity for Caerphilly businesses and individuals to showcase their excellent work from the past 12 months. The businesses in the borough are key to the Welsh economy and we take no greater pride in recognising this at the awards evening.

Caerphilly is a great place to do business. From industrial flagship businesses that Caerphilly’s roots are based upon, to the start-ups and SMEs that are nurtured at hubs like Welsh ICE, the borough is thriving with exciting business prospects. The awards programme has showcased how much ambition there is within the borough, ideally placed to benefit from developments in the creation of the Cardiff Capital region in the next few years.”

Bryn Meadows was nominated for ‘Hotel of the Year’ and at the inaugural Welsh Hospitality Awards in November.  The team were very proud of General Manager, Mr Gavyn Bolton, who won the ‘Best Hotel General Manager’ accolade at the awards ceremony.

“So he’s done it! Mr Gavyn Bolton has been awarded ‘General Manager of the Year’ at the Welsh #HospitalityAwards.  We were over the moon with his nomination – he is highly thought of by staff, members and visitors at Bryn Meadows – so knowing he has won is incredible news!”

Annual inspections from AA and Visit Wales have allowed us to keep our 4 star listing, with positive comments across the board.

The end of 2016 will also see a complete refresh of the Bryn Meadows website.  The outdated and out styled site is being overhauled and re-designed, and will offer guests additional functions currently not available including the option to purchase event tickets online. This will also apply for gift vouchers.  Overall guests should be able to find information they require quicker and will be a lot clearer.

Golf:

In May the First Swing Academy, our junior golfers, were the Welsh Street Golf Champions and the HSBC National UK Street Golf Championship at the beginning of June for the second year running.

Bryn Meadows Golf, Hotel & Spa Head of Golf Development, David Pocock.  He said, “For a golf tutor, the biggest reward is seeing those who you have coached excel.  These children started with little to no skills in golf and over a short period of time have developed into very promising players.  Katy and I were thrilled to support them and it was exhilarating to watch them win, we are both extremely proud of them all.”

Our golfers have also been able to boast about Winners Bar being voted the ‘Best Welsh Club House’ by Top Golfer Magazine, and 4th in the UK.

Our PGA Professional, Katy Edwards, made history as the first lady to tee off in the WPGA Lombard Trophy Final in Portugal, and got a hole in one on the 7th tee the first of her professional career.

“Janet and I worked well as a pair, and supported each other throughout.  I’m delighted Lombard and The PGA have invited women to play in this tournament. It’s something else women in golf can get involved and make our mark.  A big part of my role at Bryn Meadows is to teach children and ladies how to play the game, and I hope that more are encouraged to take up the sport.”  Katy Edwards, PGA Professional, Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa.

The team have also been recognised as a ‘Golf Union of Wales Centre of Excellence’ and were a finalist for ‘Welsh Golf Club of the Year’.

Blas Restaurant:

Blas Restaurant was nominated for ‘Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year’ at the Welsh Food & Drink Awards, which was followed by an incredibly successful afternoon tea month in September with a speciality tea inspired by Roald Dahl.  Demand was so high, it had to be rolled over into October.

Blas in the Welsh language means taste, and it’s what we aim to deliver to our guests for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and traditional roasts on Sunday.  The restaurant offers spectacular views of the surrounding Brecon Beacons and the five valleys.  The kitchen celebrates the best Welsh ingredients, sourcing from local suppliers on a weekly basis to create modern dishes with a contemporary flair.” Leighton Rees-Thomas, Head Chef at Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa

In October Blas Restaurant, the Beacons Suite and Captains room was refurbished to include a new carpet throughout, and the bar was upgraded and refitted.

Weddings:

Over the last 5 years we have been nominated and shortlisted by our brides and grooms as ‘Best Venue’ at the Welsh National Wedding Awards.

A rare opportunity this year also allowed us to give away a Wedding, costing over £5000 to a very worthy couple. We believe that we are the only establishment in the borough to do this.  The competition was supported by some of our preferred wedding suppliers including Henrietta Vintage Car Hire, Embrace Wedding Videography, Wedding Gems, Lovey Dovey UK and Ultrabooth.  The wedding will take place on 30th December 2016.

What a way to end 2016 and start the New Year as a married couple. I am ecstatic that my team are able to offer Kelly and Dan the opportunity to win a wedding day package like this.  We have a great reputation as a wedding venue having been nominated and shortlisted over the last five years as ‘Best Venue’ in our region at the Welsh National Wedding Awards.

We received nearly 350 entries over the 2 week period, so narrowing down a shortlist was very difficult.  Myself and the Wedding Team met a few couples last week, which made the final decision even harder.  It was fantastic to read so many different and interesting stories, and in our way get to know these couples a bit better.  If only we could have given them all the prize!  What struck us about Kelly and Dan, was not their hardship, but the love they clearly have for each other, their outlook on life, and their exciting plans for the future with their daughter.” Gavyn Bolton, General Manager, Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa

Fusion Spa and Leisure:

Fusion Spa was shortlisted ‘Spa of the Year’ in the annual Welsh Hair & Beauty Awards.

Andrew Phillips, Fusion Spa & Leisure Manager at Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa said, “I’m extremely proud of the nomination for Spa of the Year, especially as our guests were the ones who had to nominate.  Treatment times can be fully booked up to 6 weeks in advance, so I know the team work incredibly hard and it’s fantastic to have this recognised.

Fusion Leisure was also refurbished.  New cardio equipment has been installed, plus a Smith Machine (which is used for weight training).  The gym was also completely remodelled.

2017 is equally as ambitious as this year:

The team have been shortlisted for 4 awards at the Business Growth Awards 2017; Blas Restaurant as the ‘Foodie’s Favourite’, Winners Bar as ‘Best Bar’, Fusion Spa as ‘Health, Beauty & Wellness’ and ‘Economic Contribution’ for continued investment in our local community.

Winners Bar will also be getting new additions, with a bespoke kitchen being added and the launch of its own restaurant which will feature an affordable locally sourced menu. A Winners Restaurant Manager has been appointed and will oversee the work.

Funding has also been secured for a state of the art golfing simulator, which will be housed within the new extension to the building.  Our members and guests will be able to play courses from around the world, as well as get first class elite tuition.

A planning application has been submitted for a new function suite to hold up to 350 guests.  This will allow us to hold bigger functions, events and weddings throughout the year and not only the festive period.  The structure will be fully air-conditioned, its own bar, toilets and conferencing facilities.

These projects represent an investment in the region of £1.1 million, which will also lead to job creation and sustainment of 140 employees.  The completed improvements show a forward thinking business that adapts and invests in its employees and patrons.  Bryn Meadows is a market leader within the Caerphilly Tourism and Hospitality sector. Its longevity has provided a secure sustainable business that has consistently performed for more than 40 years, continuing to attract local, domestic and international visitors to Caerphilly.”  Mr Gary Mayo, Director of Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa.
