There has been a lot going on recently at Wales’ largest Junior Golf Academy – First Swing – with some fantastic achievements
Wales Mini Masters Final
Six of the junior members qualified for the Wales Mini Masters Final which was played last week at the Celtic Manor. All of the youngsters performed brilliantly in horrifically wet conditions. Although the team did not clinch a category win, there were two runners up; Lacey Williams and Hari Davies. Congratulations to Arwel Jones, Adam Lewis, Sam Harding and Ethan Paterson who were are other finalists.
During October our Professional Golfers visited or were visited by several local primary schools where the children were given a fun golf taster session. In all, over 150 children took part and all of these children have been invited to attend further lessons with us at the club.
Our new Assistant Professional, Rhys Pugh, is now a registered member of the PGA and has officially started his training programme. This will take Rhys three years to complete and involves working full time at the club as well as completing a degree in Professional Golf Studies. Rhys also has to play in seven tournaments per year and played his first event last week. Scoring a 2 under par score was enough to claim second place in the South Wales PGA event played on his home course.
The Junior Championship was played for in October, over 30 youngsters taking part. At the end of play we had several new champions:
- Overall Junior Champion – Matt Clark
- Handicap Champion – Adam Lewis
- Intermediate Champion – Joshua Gough
- Academy Champion (10+) – Kian Godwin
- Academy Champion (10-) Ashton Capp
Congratulations to all our winners and everyone who took part!
Gwent League Playoffs
Both our junior teams were victorious in their league campaigns and reached the Gwent League Playoffs where they battled to reach the Inter County Finals. The finals were played at Llanwern Golf Club and at the end of play our team finished in 3rd place overall behind winners Llanwern and runners up St Pierre.
The First Swing Golf Academy has grown into the Wales’ largest junior golf hub, since opening in September 2014. Players of all ages are able to learn on a 9 hole academy course designed with beginners in mind. Alongside this they can also practise putting in the indoor putting studio and develop skills and play in all season on the state of the art golf simulator. Coaching blocks are available or individual golf lessons.
