2017 has been a year of fantastic achievements for Bryn Meadows, across all departments of the resort.
The annual inspections from both AA and Visit Wales have allowed us to keep our 4 star listing, with positive comments across the board. The stars reflect the facilities and overall quality of the experience, with the accessors rating the quality of the business, consistency in key areas and facility requirements.
In October the team were also shortlisted for ‘Hotel of the Year’ at the Welsh Hospitality Awards 2017 for the second year running. The nominations came from our guests and members of the public.
Fusion Spa and Wellness Leisure Club
In May Fusion Spa won the regional and overall the coveted ‘Spa of the Year’ award at the Welsh Hair & Beauty Awards 2017. The team were shortlisted in 2015 and 2016 from nominations from previous clients. At the beginning of 2017 the team were also shortlisted in the ‘Health, Beauty & Wellness’ section of the Business Growth Awards.
Following the recent completion of our brand new function room, The Fairway Wedding Suite, a new fitness class time table was introduced in December as the team we are now able to use The Barn Suite as a fitness studio. The very popular aqua aerobics sessions are now held on a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday at 10.15am. A new class Pure Cardio HIIT will take place on Friday at 6.00pm or Sunday at 9.15am. It works on building speed, endurance and is ideal for those focusing on weight loss.
The Leisure Team were also shortlisted as 'Fitness Club of the Year' and 'Fitness Event of the Year' for Train The Trainer at the South Wales Fitness Awards 2017.
Blas Restaurant is open seven days a week producing homemade food for breakfast, afternoon tea, lunch and dinner, and traditional roasts on Sundays. Run by Head Chef, Leighton Rees-Thomas, the restaurant offers spectacular views of the surrounding valleys including a glimpse of Pen-y-Fan and the Brecon Beacons. The Chef’s also cater for conferences and events every week and weddings throughout the year.
In May, for the second year running, Blas Restaurant was nominated and shortlisted as Hotel Restaurant of the Year at the Food Awards Wales 2017. The team were also nominated as ‘Foodie’s Favourite’ at the Business Growth Awards 2017.
Winners Bar was extended and refurbished in May 2017, and introduced a hot and cold snack menu including award winning pies. The team have been working on removing the stereotypical ‘golf clubhouse’ persona and welcoming everyone to Winners, created a coffee house feel by day and sports bar night. Many still believe that it is members only which is not the case. Clientele vary from the traditional golfer before or after a round, ladies who lunch, business professionals to have an informal meeting and hotel residents enjoying their evening.
At the Business Growth Awards 2017 the team were shortlisted as ‘Best Bar’, which is testament to the hard work of the team led by Winners Manager, Roberto Rossi. A familiar face in the local community, Roberto was born and raised in nearby Blackwood, and has 20 years’ experience in the industry, previously owning The Square Café and running the food operations at prestigious establishments including Cardiff Castle.
Our Junior Golfers have a lot to brag about. Five teams and members of the First Swing Golf Academy entered the Welsh qualifier in June 2017, becoming ‘Welsh StreetGolf Champions’ for the 3rd year running. The winning team were then invited to play in the national final where they finished 2n in July. In September two of the junior teams were victorious in their league campaigns where they battled to reach the Inter County Finals, in the Gwent League Playoffs, where they finished 3rd overall. Six juniors also qualified for the Wales Mini Masters Final in October. Play was in horrific wet conditions but two of them were runners up.
Our state of the Golf Simulator officially opened in May. The Foresight GC Quad is one of the hottest new products on the market. The professional features include unprecedented ball and club performance and it can improve the performance for golfers and it has been a haven during poor weather. Non golfers and improvers are also able to use the technology, to learn new skills.
The Wedding Team have been short-listed as ‘Best Venue’ at the Welsh National Wedding Awards for the 6th year running and in 2017 won for our region. Nominations come directly from our brides and grooms, with the top five wedding venues with the most votes are shortlisted.
In November the brand new Fairway Suite opened, which going forward is where all of the weddings will be held, as well as conferences and events. It can seat up to 300 people, with full length windows across the entire room with views onto the 10th and 11th fairways, which also feature a water pond and fountain. The private veranda is also the perfect place for guests to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. The suite is detached from the main resort with its own reception room and private bar.
In August, a fantastic prize of a wedding was given away supported by Pritchard & Moore, a boutique bridal shop based in Cardiff where all of their profits go directly to Cancer Research Wales. The lucky winners and said their nuptials in-front of friends and family on 13th October 2017.Investment and Community
As well as the investments to Winners Bar and building the new Fairway Suite, a lot of changes have been made behind the scenes. A new booking system, Guestline, was introduced in early 2017 which has improved the process for the Sales team to make hotel reservations, and book conferences and events, which in turn has enhanced the experience for the customer. Alongside this the re-new and revamped website developed and support by Spindogs, has not only made it easier for guests to find information but enables them to book events or even purchase gift vouchers online – something that was previously not possible.
Supporting local organisations is also paramount to what we do. Some of the highlights included hosting the Blackwood Community Art Group Exhibition and Fair for the third year running, in November. In December our mascot Bryn Bear visited Ystrad Mynach Hospital, and gave out presents on the children’s ward. A host of charitable events have also been hosted with golf days for Age Connects Morgannwg, Velindre Cancer Centre and our annual Brian Mayo Golf Day for Meningitis Now.
Team members also work with organisations and are part of the business community, and this year we were the title sponsor at the annual Caerphilly 10k which was held in June. Weather conditions were fantastic but made for unbelievably difficult conditions for all runners with temperatures reaching 28 degrees at 10.30am.
Commitment to the Caerphilly area and being a market leader for the hospitality industry is key to what we do. A team member sits on the board for Visit Caerphilly and where possible is present at networking and business events. Our ongoing financial investments have also led to job creation and sustainment, which has provided a secure sustainable business that has consistently performed for 45 years, continuing to attract local, domestic and international visitors to Caerphilly. This was reflected by the recognition of ‘Economic Contribution’ shortlist at the Business Growth Awards 2017.
