Golf Awareness Month was created to encourage people who may not think they would like golf to give it a try and benefit from all this sport has to offer. The best way to celebrate Golf Month is to get out and play some golf! If you’re someone who already plays golf, maybe try getting some friends or family members who have never tried to join you for a few hours on the course. And if you’ve never tried, it’s the perfect time to start!
About David Pocock
We are very proud to have David Pocock as part of our golf team. As well as being a Professional Golfer, he is also Head of Golf Operations at the resort, which means he is responsible for the professional delivery and development of all aspects of our golf programmes including membership, guest satisfaction, golf experience as well as promoting the facilities including our Golf Simulator and retail opportunities.
The changes and challenges faced by the club and the golf industry are being met head on. There is a significant focus in encouraging more children to take up the sport. A few years ago we only had a handful of children in coaching whereas today there are over 100 members in weekly coaching sessions.
David has been a big influence at the resort and joined the team to oversee the building of our First Swing Golf Academy 9 hole course in 2014. Since then the academy has grown into Wales’ largest junior golf academy, and has given 1000’s of children aged 3 plus the opportunity firstly to try the sport and secondly to follow a structured playing and coaching pathway taking them from complete beginners to accomplished golfers. The size and popularity of the academy also gives the youngsters access to weekly competitions and national tournaments.
“For a golf tutor, the biggest reward is seeing those who you have coached excel. Most of the children started with little to no skills in golf and in a short period of time have developed into very promising players. I’d love to retire knowing that thousands of golfers played the game because I worked hard to make it happen.”
Hailing from Aberdeen in Scotland originally he moved to Wales in 2010. He accredits his Uncle Mike Pocock for getting him into the sport. As a junior golfer at Turriff he was also inspired by the PGA Pro at his club Robin Smith. His favourite golf course is Royal Troon in Ayrshire, and his dream 4 ball would be playing with Seve Ballesteros, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
David has many accreditations to his name including:
- Turned Pro in 2004 after doing his PGA training at Oldmeldrum
- 2 professional holes in 1, and one of them was on a Par 4!
