2019 - What a year...
24 Dec

Well what a year 2019 has been for Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel and Spa. It’s amazing how 365 days can have such an impact. As a company we have yet again achieved so much, rounded off with beating stiff competition and winning Resort of the year at the Welsh Hospitality awards in November!

However we want to take you right back to the start of 2019, we had just finished a record breaking Christmas 2018 and we were already starting to plan a bigger and better Christmas 2019.

For our first event of 2019 in the Fairway, we hosted singing duo ‘Into the Ark’ fresh from their appearance on the voice and touring with Sir Tom Jones they certainly started 2019 off with a bang!

Also In January 2019 after the addition of Natasha Gobey as PGA Pro came a revolution in our first swing academy, together with Katy Edwards they hugely increased the numbers and are now thrilled to confirm they have a huge 121 people in weekly group coaching. 91 of these are juniors with 72 boys and 19 girls in total. A major factor in this has been their work in the Sport Caerphilly area were they went on to attend over 15 primary schools within the local area throughout 2019. They also identified an area with potential growth in the ladies membership of the club so with this in mind they set up New2Golf coaching programmes for ladies and are happy to report that this year we introduced 18 ladies to a New2Golf first year membership and we currently have 23 ladies in weekly coaching hoping to introduce more in 2020.

In February new Head Chef Stuart Spicer joined the team, bringing a wealth of work experience in hospitality after being trained for 3 years at the prestigious Westminster College as well as working in the houses of parliament. He has brought a new flare and excitement to the food and beverage team as well as a passion for welsh produce which he has now managed to largely incorporate into our menus. He came just in time for Valentine’s Day, were we served nearly 200 people at our Shape of Sheeran fairway event alone as well as a host of residents and a la carte diners.

In March our spa had a wonderful refurbishment of their treatment rooms and relax area, along with this they also changed to brand to spa specialist ESPA, all of our therapists went through an intense week long training course to ensure they gave our guests the highest customer service. We feel that bringing ESPA in to Fusion spa has given the team the products they can believe in and the ability to guide our customers into what is best for them.

Our Golf Season seems to be starting earlier and earlier each year and this year was no exception with our first large group joining us mid-March, this really set the trend for the rest of 2019 with nearly 30 golf breaks between March – November plus societies it was a record breaking year in our Golf department. With this success we recently started a Men’s New2Golf coaching programme as we found a lot of men wanting to get into golf but didn’t know how, we currently have 7 men already in the programme with the aim of growing in 2020.

In April our Leisure manager Andrew completed the London marathon and after months of dedication and fundraising he completed it in a fantastic 3hrs and 34minutes.

We also heard the news that one of the biggest girl bands in the world ‘The Spice Girls’ were reforming, in their honour in April we hosted a tribute night with a 3 course meal and entertainment. With over 250 people in attendance it was a fantastic night had by all.

In May we sponsored the Caerphilly 10k for another year, with over 2500 runners it was the most successful year to date with our Fusion Leisure Team hosting the children and adults warm up as well as over 20 of our staff and members taking part in the race.

In June prom season hit the Fairway suite, we hosted 7 proms including super school Islwyn High, with nearly 200 students and teachers it was our biggest to date. Our social media went crazy with the pupil’s posts and the feedback was amazing

2019 was a massive year for Weddings at Bryn Meadows with a humongous 85 couples choosing to get married with us. As prom season ended by July and August we were officially at the height of wedding season with back to back weddings most weekends. With the Fairway suite being able to accommodate up to 300 people the sky was the limit for our dedicated wedding team.

In September our first swing junior academy turned 5. Established in 2014, initially the 9 hole course was designed with beginners in mind and opened with the aid of funding from Sport Wales.  We opened with 4 children signed up. We now have 91 academy children, with coaching sessions held 7 days a week. We also held our annual Brian Mayo Meningitis day in September, we raised a massive £4610.00 which is the highest total to date. This charity is very close to our heart and we love working with them. We also got nominated for gym of the year for another year running thanks to Andrew and his fantastic team’s hard work.

In October Halloween hit our Winners bar with two sell out children’s parties and an adult only party we welcomed nearly 250 spooktacular visitors.

We also saw the arrival of the new sun loungers within our leisure area along with new lighting in the pool.

November was a fantastic month for us as firstly our PGA Pro Natasha was nominated for Coach of the Year at the Caerphilly sports award then we were informed that we had been shortlisted for ‘Resort of the Year’ at the National hospitality awards. Up against stiff competition from much larger establishments it was an honour to have just been a finalist. Held at the prestigious Exchange hotel in Cardiff we attended in force and to our surprise was announced as ‘Resort of the Year 2019’. This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication our staff display everyday constantly ensure they give the best customer service possible. Our loyal customers play a huge part in making our job so enjoyable and without them we really would be able to do what we do daily. By winning resort of the year it shows we may be relatively small but we really are mighty!

We also decided to revamp our leisure times in November, it now opens at 6am with early morning classes coming in the New Year which we are all very excited about!

That brings us up to December, our leisure members are battling to be pudding challenge champions, we are welcoming 2 weddings and of course Christmas 2019 which is set to be the biggest yet with over 8500 people expected to attend our events as well as a host of private functions the team have been working hard to prepare for a seamless execution. Our cabaret lunches are always a firm favourite and with nearly 300 people attending our Freddie Mercury tribute this year hasn’t disappointed. Our Barn Suite tribute nights have been a sell out again and our Fairway party nights hit a record number.

For the first time this year we decided to ‘Go Crackerless’ at Christmas. Our aim was that by leading the way in taking crackers away we were not only doing our small part in helping the environment but also giving a special Christmas gift to our two fantastic chosen charities. We presented Velindre and Noah’s Ark a cheque for £1000.00 each.

In 2020 our aim is to continue to grow, building on our success but constantly improving to deliver the highest customer experience and are excited to see what 2020 has to offer. We think it’s going to be the best yet.

We would like to thank all our guests for their continued support and we hope that you all have a very Merry Christmas.

We would like to finish by saying a big ‘THANK YOU’ to all of the staff at Bryn Meadows for all their hard work, they are all looking forward to their ‘Christmas’ party in January, we can’t wait to celebrate the success of 2019!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
